  • Decades of Dedication: UCB’s Ongoing Commitment to Epilepsy through the Family Epilepsy Scholarship Program™

For more than three decades, UCB has remained dedicated to supporting individuals living with epilepsy and rare syndromes, along with their family members and caregivers. Our efforts go far beyond treatment development; we’re committed to this community every step of their journey, from diagnosis to ongoing care and support. Through education, advocacy, programs, and community outreach, UCB aims to support this community every step of the way.

Since its launch in 2004, the program has helped ease the financial costs associated with higher education, such as tuition, fees, room and board, and other additional costs by providing scholarships to individuals impacted by epilepsy. Reflecting UCB’s long-standing commitment to community care, the program proudly celebrates its 21st anniversary this year. With a 15% increase in enrollment, it continues to expand its reach, offering meaningful educational opportunities and helping recipients advance toward their academic and personal goals.

To date, UCB has awarded more than $3.5 million in scholarships to over 680 individuals pursuing undergraduate and graduate studies. This year alone, 33 scholarships were granted, including the $10,000 Joe D’Souza Memorial Scholarship, two $10,000 Epilepsy Leader Scholarships, and 30 $5,000 awards, encouraging students to pursue their academic dreams while living with or being affected by epilepsy.

Amanda A., recipient of the Joe D’Souza Memorial Scholarship, stated, “This scholarship will help me with the next and possibly greatest step in taking my life back.”

The program has not only transformed the lives of its recipients but also served as a model of success within UCB, inspiring other business groups to launch similar initiatives. This year, we have worked closely with our Rare Disease colleagues, sharing insights and best practices to help them launch their own successful scholarship program.

Designed for individuals living with epilepsy or a developmental epileptic encephalopathy (DEEs) such as Dravet syndrome or Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, as well as their family members and caregivers, the scholarship recognizes those who demonstrate both personal and academic excellence and a strong commitment to their local communities.

By actively collaborating with strategic partners, we continue to advance our mission of delivering long-term value and meaningful support to people living with epilepsy. As part of the application process, candidates share their personal stories, community involvement, and academic aspirations. A distinguished panel of patient advocates and medical experts specializing in neurology select the scholarship winners, ensuring the program remains both impactful and aligned with the needs of the epilepsy community and program.

One of the $5,000 scholarship recipients, Christopher “CJ” B., shared his experience of overcoming challenges: “I refused to let epilepsy define me or limit my aspirations. Instead, it fueled my determination to succeed academically, engage in my community, and advocate for others facing similar struggles.”
