Our Innovation Journey: From Patient to Science to Solution

With Innovation Day upcoming on February 17, we’re highlighting our approach to innovation, what we call at UCB the “patient-science-solution” model. Everything we do starts and ends with what patients value, but it is a continuous journey. Starting with the patient – we listen to their experiences, what they value, their needs, and keep them at the heart of everything we do.

Because our innovation is ongoing as we continue to seek to meet unmet needs, the model is cyclical and always comes back to the patient. Here are a few examples of

Patients. We are committed to enabling people to live their best lives through impactful solutions. One example is incorporating the patient perspective into our clinical research studies by partnering with patients at various points across the clinical development continuum to improve study design, review select protocols, and seek direct input on their thoughts and feelings related to their study participation.

Another example is our support of numerous patient communities and resources to help patients and their caregivers have the information and support they need to manage their condition. These include our EpilepsyAdvocate and MorethanMotion communities as well as the UCB Family Epilepsy Scholarship Program™, which awards 32 scholarships to people in the epilepsy community pursuing higher education.

Science. To deliver on our commitment, we are relentlessly driven by science. Globally, we invest about a quarter of our revenue annually in R&D to incubate new solutions  And our research is cutting-edge – whether it’s our work in protein engineering and structural biology or our work harnessing the power of predictive analytics along with machine learning through our eliprio® technology.

In addition, we’re connecting science in new ways to illuminate the biological pathways involved in severe diseases. Meet a few of UCB’s researchers and hear more about what motivates them to continue innovating: Drs. Luiz Miguel CamargoHenrik Klitgaard, and Victor Sloan.

Solution. Ultimately, we are focused on developing solutions  patients value, offering them a meaningful experience. One example is developing differentiated medicines that help specific patients achieve their goals, with a focus on diseases with unmet needs. Read more about our pipeline.

Moreover, our ucbCARES team is ready to provide caring answers to any inquiries from patients, their caregivers, and health care providers related to UCB solutions to make sure they’re connected to the information or resources they need.

We are committed to continuing to innovate – from patient to science to solution. We are inspired by patients and driven by science to deliver what patients value.
